Money Market is the backbone of short-term finance. If Capital Market is for wealth creation, Money Market is for *survival and liquidity.

Here is everything you need to know, in simple language:

### 1. WHAT IS MONEY MARKET?

A market for *borrowing and lending money for 1 day to 1 year.* Highly liquid, very safe, low return.

*Objective:* To manage day-to-day cash needs of Banks, Government, and Big Companies.

It’s not a physical place like NSE - it’s mostly over-the-counter, controlled by RBI in India, Fed in USA.

### 2. KEY CHARACTERISTICS

- *Tenure:* 1 day to 12 months

- *Safety:* Very high - issued by Govt and top-rated banks/companies

- *Liquidity:* Highest - you can sell anytime

- *Return:* Low but stable - 6-8% in India currently

- *Ticket Size:* Very large - Min ₹5 Lakh per deal, usually in crores

### 3. WHO ARE THE PLAYERS?

- *RBI / Central Bank:* Regulator and biggest player

- *Banks:* Borrow/lend daily to maintain CRR/SLR

- *Government:* Borrows short-term via T-Bills

- *Corporates:* Tata, Reliance, Infosys - issue Commercial Paper

- *Mutual Funds:* You invest in Money Market via Liquid Funds

### 4. MAIN INSTRUMENTS - This is the Most Important Part

Instrument | Issuer | Tenure | Purpose

**1. Treasury Bills (T-Bills)** | Govt of India (RBI) | 91, 182, 364 Days | Govt's short-term borrowing

**2. Call & Notice Money** | Banks | 1 Day (Call) / 2-14 Days (Notice) | Banks borrow from each other daily

**3. Commercial Paper (CP)** | Top Companies | 7 days to 1 year | Companies borrow cheap for working capital

**4. Certificate of Deposit (CD)** | Banks | 7 days to 1 year | Bank raises money from market

**5. Repurchase Agreement (Repo)** | RBI & Banks | 1 day to 90 days | RBI lends to banks against Govt securities

**6. Commercial Bill / Bill of Exchange** | Businesses | Up to 90 days | For trade finance - goods sold on credit

**7. Money Market Mutual Funds** | AMCs | Open ended | Retail investors like you can invest

*In India, the 3 most traded are: T-Bills, Call Money, and Commercial Paper.*

### 5. CORE FUNCTIONS - Why Money Market Exists?

*1. Provides Liquidity:* A bank short of cash at 3 PM can borrow in Call Money Market by 3:30 PM.

*2. Controls Monetary Policy:* RBI uses Repo Rate to control inflation. Repo is a money market instrument.

*3. Short-term Funding for Govt & Companies:* Instead of taking a 10-year loan, Govt takes 91-day loan via T-Bills.

*4. Sets the Base Interest Rate:* All your FD, loan, and savings account rates are decided based on Money Market rates.

*5. Safe Parking for Surplus:* Companies like TCS park ₹10,000 Cr for 30 days in T-Bills instead of keeping it idle in current account.

*6. Price Discovery:* It tells us what is the true cost of money for 1 day, 1 month, 1 year.

### 6. MONEY MARKET vs CAPITAL MARKET

Feature | Money Market | Capital Market

Tenure | < 1 Year | > 1 Year

Risk | Very Low | High

Return | 6-8% | 12-15%+

Instruments | T-Bills, CP, CD | Shares, Bonds

Purpose | Liquidity | Wealth Creation

### 7. HOW CAN YOU INVEST?

You cannot directly buy T-Bills for ₹500. But you can via:

- *Liquid Funds / Money Market Funds:* Best for emergency fund. Better than savings account. Returns ∼7%.

- *RBI Retail Direct:* You can buy T-Bills directly from RBI app with just ₹25,000.

- *ETFs:* Liquid ETFs like LIQUIDBEES.

> *Dr. Ratneshwar Prasad Sinha Formula:*

> Don't put emergency fund in savings. Put 50% in Liquid Fund (Money Market) and 50% in your bank. Money Market is where "Kuch Nahi Hi Sab Kuch Hai" works - small interest daily becomes big security.

*Final Truth:*

Money Market never makes you rich. But it ensures you never become poor due to cash crunch. Every successful Project Manager, CFO, and Independent Director must understand it.
